I would like to interview Lady Jane Moore
1. Please tell us something about yourself.
Lady Jane Moore:
I suppose I can tell you since you’re bound to guess this after knowing me for a few years.
Or a few minutes.
I’m a trifle bossy. Mind you, only a trifle. It’s only because I’m good at organizing. Miss Stranje calls me a strategist—a mastermind.
Nonsense. It’s simply a matter of determining what move your enemy will make next, as one does in chess.
Except in this game, the stakes are life and death.
2. How did you find yourself at Stranje House? Was it strange (please forgive the pun) to find yourself in such a place and among such unusual girls for company?
At first, it was horrifying.
My older brothers packed me up and hauled me off to Stranje House because I prevented them from plundering our estate to support their gambling habits. I love my brothers, really, I do, but they are hopelessly addicted to gaming.
Miss Stranje has a terrifying reputation. Society matrons believe she is cruelly whipping their wayward daughters into marriageable misses. In truth, she’s secretly training us to navigate the treacherous waters of diplomacy and spies.
I love a challenge. Banishing me to Stranje House turned out to be perfect for me.
3. Among your friends at Stranje House, who do you most get along with? Why do you think that is?
I love them all; they’re like sisters to me.
Georgie is brilliant and completely genuine. Maya has the grace of a princess and the most magical calming voice you’ll ever hear. And Tess . . . well . . . Tess is stubborn and fierce, her nightmares are unnerving, but there’s no better ally to have in a sticky situation.
Out of the five, though, Seraphina is my closest friend. I’ve no idea why she is so sweet and kind to me. Sera observes everything. Surely, she must see that I don’t really deserve her kindness.
4. What do you think about American inventor Alexander Sinclair?
I have long admired Robert Fulton for his brilliant inventions: the steamship and the submarine.
His nephew is equally brilliant, but Alexander Sinclair is quite possibly the most maddening young man in all of Christendom. He is a sharp-tongued rascal with boorish American manners, but his life is in danger, and I cannot bear the thought of anyone harming the golden-haired genius. I will protect him even if at the cost of my life.
5. What are your thoughts concerning the war and the role you play in it?
I detest war, but Napoleon must be stopped before he invades England. Lady Daneska thinks the world will be better off with him as Grand Emperor. But if he positions people like her and Ghost as our rulers there is only suffering in our future.
6. If there was one thing you could do differently, what would it be?
Ah, you are making me a confess a painful truth—I wish I had learned to trust my friends sooner.
